    iPhone 12 release date

We have a grand total of 4 iPhone 12 models to pick from. Here are their names:

    • 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini
    • 6.1-inch iPhone 12
    • 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro
    • 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max

The iPhones launched in two waves — first we got the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro. The small iPhone 12 mini and big iPhone 12 Pro Max came out a couple of weeks after. In any case, they are all here now and here's where you can get the best deals on them:

    You'll love these...

    iPhone 12 price

The iPhone 12 has gotten a bump in pricing — it's $100 more expensive than last year's iPhone 11. The $700 slot is now taken by the compact-ish iPhone 12 mini.

    • Apple iPhone 12 mini price: from $699 for 64 GB
    • Apple iPhone 12 price: from $799 for 64 GB
    • Apple iPhone 12 Pro: from $999 for 128 GB
    • Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max: from $1,099 for 128 GB

There is a catch, though! These prices are only accurate if you activate your iPhone 12 on Verizon or AT&T. If you buy unlocked or on any other network (for now), the prices go up by $30, and that goes for all 4 models.

    iPhone 12 unlocked prices

    • Apple iPhone 12 mini price: from $729 for 64 GB
    • Apple iPhone 12 price: from $829 for 64 GB
    • Apple iPhone 12 Pro: from $1,029 for 128 GB
    • Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max: from $1,129 for 128 GB

The classic iPhone 12 design: flat sides, stark look

The iPhone 12 line finally got a facelift. While the phones have a very recognizable look from the front and back — the notch in the display and the square-shaped camera hill on the back — we now have flat sides. This has been leaked for months pre-release and the Internet has been loving the new iPhone 5-inspired look.

The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 have aluminum bodies sandwiched between two layers of glass. The Pro models have stainless steel frames, again. The display panels are covered in an all-new Ceramic Shield glass, developed in partnership with Corning. As last year, the Pro models have a soft matte finish on the back, while the iPhone 12 and 12 mini are glossy.

And, like the iPhone 11 line, the iPhone 12 comes in fresh and vibrant colors — red, green, blue, white, and black —, while the Pro models come in more mature colors — graphite, silver, gold, and pacific blue.

iPhone 12 camera: we got plenty

The iPhone line continues the established tradition. The "cheaper" iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 have dual cameras on their backs, while the Pro models have that triple-cam "stove" setup (let's start calling it Splinter Cell camera).

So, what's new? The main cameras have 12 MP sensors behind lenses with big, F1.6 apertures. The iPhone 12 Pro Max has the biggest sensor with 1.7 μm pixels, while the other models have slightly smaller, 1.4 μm pixel sensors. All four models also have the beloved 12 MP ultra-wide cameras.

The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have their third telephoto camera for optical zoom and portrait shots. The smaller Pro still sticks to 2x magnification, while the Pro Max now offers 2.5x zoom. No crazy super-zoom modes on the iPhone 12 line this year.

The selfie cameras have the same specs as the 12 MP front-facing cams of the iPhone 11 line.

Apple has also added software improvements — Smart HDR 3 with Scene Detection will now take its time to fine-tune individual objects in a photo for best results. And Night Mode is now available on the ultra-wide and selfie cameras!

    iPhone 12 zoom

The rumors said we'd see some crazy super-zoom for the iPhone 12 Pro line this year, but nope. Here are your maximum zoom levels

    • iPhone 12 mini digital zoom: 5x for photos, 3x for video
    • iPhone 12 max digital zoom: 5x for photos, 3x for video
    • iPhone 12 Pro optical zoom: 2x
    • iPhone 12 Pro digital zoom: 10x for photos, 6x for video
    • iPhone 12 Pro Max optical zoom: 2.5x
    • iPhone 12 Pro Max digital zoom: 12x for photos, 7x for video

    4K HDR video

All iPhone 12 models are capable of recording 4K video in Dolby Vision HDR. The slight difference here is that the cheaper iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 models are limited to 30 FPS in this mode, while the Pro and Pro Max can hit 60 FPS. If you disable HDR, you can take 4K clips at 60 FPS on the cheaper models as well.

    iPhone 12 Pro LiDAR scanner

The LiDAR scanner has finally made it to the iPhones! It's a highly advanced depth-detection sensor, which is to be used for advanced AR apps. Like your virtual rulers or virtual furniture shopping apps. The LiDAR scanner is also used for Night Mode Portrait shots for more accurate separation between subject and dark background.

iPhone 12 display: OLED you glad we switched?

All of the iPhone 12 models now have OLED panels and all of them are branded Super Retina XDR, supporting HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG. All of them are pretty sharp, well above the 326 PPI, which the iPhone 11 stubbornly stuck to.

So, here are the display sizes and resolutions of the iPhone 12 models:

    • iPhone 12 mini: 5.4", 1080 x 2340 pixels (476 PPI)
    • iPhone 12: 6.1", 1170 x 2532 pixels (460 PPI)
    • iPhone 12 Pro: 6.1" 1170 x 2532 pixels (460 PPI)
    • iPhone 12 Pro Max: 6.7", 1284 x 2778 pixels (458 PPI)

So, they are all sharp and colorful. They are also protected by a brand new tempered glass. Apple calls it Ceramic Shield and it has been developed in partnership with Corning. The fancy name comes from its structure — nanoceramic crystals are infused with the glass, which supposedly makes it the "toughest smartphone glass".

The Apple A13 Bionic processor is already extremely powerful. Many would argue that it’s being held back by iOS but the ultimate point is that it provides for super snappy performance and raises the iPhone 11’s computational photography to a whole new level.

The Apple A14, which was earlier introduced with the iPad Air 4th gen, is a brand new Apple silicon, built on a 5 nm process and it sounds like it's going to be the chip to beat in 2021.

What’s with the nanometers? Basically, the smaller the distance between the components, the less energy they drain and the smaller the processor is. So, in terms of battery drain to productive power conversion, the less nm, the better. The projected speed boost for the 2020 Apple processors is about 15% over the current generation, all while using 30% less power

    iPhone 12 battery

Apple doesn't really reveal "boring" details like battery or RAM capacities. But hey, since the rumors have been super-accurate thus far... here's what the rumors said about the iPhone 12 line's battery sizes. We'll update these after the first teardown surfaces.

    12h 33 min
    Apple iPhone 12 Pro
    12h 35 min
    Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max

According to the reports, these are the battery sizes in the iPhone 12 models:

    • 5.4" Apple iPhone 12 mini battery: 2227 mAh
    • 6.1" Apple iPhone 12 battery: 2815 mAh
    • 6.1" Apple iPhone 12 Pro battery: 2815 mAh
    • 6.7" Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max battery: 3687 mAh

For comparison's sake, here's how the current iPhone batteries are listed:

    • 4.7" Apple iPhone SE (2020): 1821 mAh
    • 6.1" Apple iPhone 11: 3110 mAh
    • 5.8" Apple iPhone 11 Pro: 3046 mAh
    • 6.5" Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max: 3969 mAh

iPhone 12 5G: speeding into the future

Apple proudly boasted that the iPhone 12 is compatible with the widest range of 5G bands. In the USA, you can use an iPhone 12 on both mmWave and sub-6 GHz networks, so you're covered. Well... if there's coverage in your area, that is (bazinga).

iOS 14 will intelligently switch between 4G LTE and 5G, depending on signal strength and what you are doing at the current moment. No need for 5G to drain your battery if you are just checking emails.

No headphones, no charger in the box

The motivation behind that, as per analyst reports, is that Apple would like to add incentive for users to buy AirPods instead. Apple's side of the story is that it has massively reduced its carbon footprint, since users keep stockpiling the chargers and headphones without ever using them.

Less e-waste and more use for the chargers in your drawer. That sounds right, sure.
